I was fortunate to convince our administration to authorize an outside objective security evaluation of our facilities.  We contracted with Healthcare Security Consultants, Inc. to provide this service.  This process resulted in an educational process for me, my staff and managers of the various departments visited throughout the review.

 A number of opportunities for improvements were identified to enhance our security program.  Mr. Roll was also able to convince our administration that they should consider a re-organization of department from having a manager reporting to Risk Management to a director level department reporting to administration.  We were also fortunate enough to secure enhanced security staffing levels as well as moving to a one-call-center for better dispatching and monitoring of our upgraded CCTV system.

I found the overall experience of using Healthcare Security Consultants, Inc. very rewarding both personally and professionally since Mr. Roll gave me the push I needed to secure my CHPA.  The review has also identified additional recommendations that will allow us to continue to improve over the next several years.

Fred just completed his second visit to Palmetto Health Richland, a 649 bed hospital that serves central SC as the level I trauma center and home of the USC School of Medicine.  His initial visit in 2005 was shortly after the hospital completed the transition from contract to proprietary.  During that visit, he conducted a thorough program review of policy and procedures, training, security sensitive areas and the electronic security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, panic buttons and emergency call boxes).  He interviewed various department managers and directors seeking insight to how they viewed security and how security could better partner with them to provide a more safe and secure environment.  Fred’s recommendations provided a roadmap for taking our security program to the next level.  In his most recent visit, Fred spent time with each member of the security leadership team reviewing their role and how each contributes to the program, in addition to reviewing the new construction. Recently, I have had the opportunity to use the services provided by Roll Enterprises on two different occasions.  We are part of a large Metropolitan medical center with an adult and pediatric hospital.  Each hospital wanted to conduct a security survey in order to develop long-term plans for their specific security needs.  Fred’s review included a thorough assessment of security sensitive areas, physical plant, and policy/procedures.  He also took the time to include meeting with a variety of key administrators and customers of security.  His understanding of both the realities of budget constraints and perceptions about security’s return on investment were insightful and practical.  He is a champion for professionalism and a credit to those in the industry striving to achieve recognition of this highly valuable company asset.

Fred Roll assisted the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC)
with our security services in three ways over the last year.  First, he conducted
a thorough and practical assessment of our security services.  Fred then helped
us establish our own security department, further integrating security into our
operations.  This change allowed us to develop our security force in a way that
was best suited to the unique needs of a health care organization, its patients and
our workforce.  

Previous security arrangements with the university were a carry-over from the
time when the UWHC Authority was created in 1996. Ten years later, our
admissions had increased by nearly 4,000 and our clinic visits by nearly 100,000.
We had significantly expanded our facilities and opened several new locations
in the community. With this growth and increasing complexity came a need to
create a security department of the kind found at other academic medical centers
of similar size and scope.  Although the administrative structure changed,
security services transitioned uninterrupted.  

Finally, Fred helped us in all aspects of recruiting a security director.  He assisted
us in writing the position description, advised us on web-site postings that yielded
several qualified applicants, and phone screened the candidates to assess their
healthcare security expertise.  When an offer was made, Fred further reached
out to the candidate to market the position and answer questions as needed.  

Although this portion of the engagement is complete, we will be maintaining Fred
on a retainer to continue to help with the transition as needed.
